Chinese Visa Types & requirements

Family visit visa (Q1, Q2, S1 or S2 -Visa)
  • Issued to those who are going to visit a Chinese citizen with permanent residence or foreign family member in China.

  • Application Process: Applications are lodged through the China visa application center.

Proof of a hotel reservation, etc. or an invitation letter issued by a relevant entity or individual in China. The invitation letter should contain: (1) Information on the applicant (full name as per passport, gender, date of birth, passport no., etc.) (2) Information on the planned visit (arrival and departure dates, full address of place(s) to be visited, etc.) (3) Information on the inviting entity or individual (full name as per ID, contact telephone number, address, official stamp, signature of the legal representative or the inviting individual)

Duly complete all required sections, print and sign the form.

If unable to visit the embassy or application centre, please provide a letter giving consent that third party can either submit documents or collect outcome your their behalf. Provide full details of the third party and have letter certified where possible.

If applicable: Please provide a certified copy of the marriage certificate of the applicant and certified copy of the ID of the spouse.

Provide a certified colour copy of the inviter's identity document or passport information page (if not a citizen of the country of application).

If applicable, provide a clear copy of the identity document of your spouse/partner.

Photocopy of the information page and extension page (if applicable) of the passport and last Chinese Visa copy (if applicable).

Provide all confirmed flight bookings from South Africa to the final destination. All entry & exit information must also be provided. Name of the applicant must appear on all proof of transport.

Provide a certificate of your COVID vaccination.

Applicants should present both original and photocopy of their medical examination record.

A certified copy of their full, unabridged birth certificate (displaying the father and mother's names), a certified authorisation letter from both parents stating that they are giving consent for the child/children to travel out of South Africa, and certified copies of both parents' passport information pages.

If applicable, please save, fill in accordingly, and have certified.

Clear, certified copies of the identity card or passport of both parents.

Certified parental letter of consent or the affidavit from non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing the travel. This letter or affidavit should contain the dates of travel and the parents contact information.

Please provide a valid passport with at least 6 months validity with a minimum of two blank pages available (preferably adjacent to each other). Travellers are encouraged to have many blank pages to avoid inconveniences such as mistaken stamping or if there will be entering through multiple immigration points that require stamping. Passport should be in good condition with no tears or stains.

Please provide the original expired passport with previous or existing visas

Provide recent colour passport size photos in jpeg format in order to upload via the online application. Photographs should have a white background: 1. Both ears must be visible. 2. No smiling or teeth showing. 3. No Glasses, 4. Ensure that photo does not have any red-eye effects. You may not use photos older than six months and that have been used for a previous visa.

Provide the latest three months' bank statement of sponsor and letter from sponsor attesting to the fact that they will sponsor the Employee/College student on their trip abroad. The bank statement should have a clear name and details of the account holder. If the bank statements are in the name of a company for a sole proprietor or a trust, then the applicant/sponsor must provide company registration documents or trust documents showing that they are a member of the company or the trust.

Latest four months' personal bank statement showing the amount available in the account, the name of the applicant and stamped by the bank, inside the bank. NO E-STAMPS WILL BE ACCEPTED. All bank statements in Afrikaans must be accompanied by a signed and stamped visa letter from the bank on bank letterhead, in English, confirming the account holder has enough funds to travel.

Provide a letter from your employer on a company letterhead, signed by a manager, confirming employment and that the applicant will resume his/his position after the trip. The applicant's full name (as per passport), gender, date of birth. designation, and passport number must reflect on the invitation letter along with the purpose of visit. The letter should indicate their monthly salary, employment start date, specific places that will be visited, arrival and departure dates, purpose of the trip, and a statement confirming who is covering the costs of the trip.

If self-employed: Provide a certificate of incorporation from the company in South Africa.

Provide copies of the previous or current visa stickers of the different countries that you have visited and a few of the airport entry and exit stamps in your previous or current passport.

All non-South African passport holders should provide a certified copy of their SA resident's or work permit.

An invitation letter provided by a Chinese citizen or a foreign citizen residing in China with permanent residence permit. The invitation letter shall contain: a) Information of the applicant (including full name as per passport, gender, date of birth, passport number, etc.); b) Information regarding the visit (including purpose of visit, intended arrival date, intended places to stay, intended duration of stay, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, and details of financial support to stay in China). c) Information of the inviting party(including full name as per ID/passport, contact telephone number, email address. full residential address, signature of individual). The consular officer may require the applicant to submit the original of the invitation letter.

Original and photocopy of kinship certification (marriage certificate, birth certificate or notarized certification of kinship) showing the relationship of family members between the applicant and the inviting party. Relatives refers to spouse, parents, sons or daughters under the age of 18, parents-in-law.

  • How to apply: Application forms and Appointment bookings are now done online and on the appointment date applicants need to take their documents to the center so submission.

Commercial/Business Visa (M-Visa)
  • Issued to those who are invited to China for commercial and trade activities.

  • Application Process: Applications are lodged through the China visa application center.

An official invitation PU letter issued by the relevant unit in mainland China and invitation letter from Chinese company in mainland China. The invitation letter should contain: a) Information of the applicant (incl. full name as per passport, gender, date of birth, and passport number); b) Details of the planned visit (incl. purpose of visit, arrival and departure dates, full address of place(s) to be visited, relationship between the applicant and the inviting party, details of any financial support to be provided during the stay in China) ; c) Information of the inviting party (incl. full name as per ID, contact telephone number, full address, email address, official stamp, and signature of the legal representative). *The invitation letter may be in the form of fax, photocopy or computer printout, but the consular officer may require the applicant to submit the original of the invitation letter.

Authentication and Employment (Z-Visa)
  • Issued to those taking up a post or employment, or giving Commercial performances, in China

  • Application Process: Applications are lodged through the China visa application center.

Photocopy of the information page and extension page (if applicable) of the passport and last Chinese Visa copy (if applicable).

1) Notification letter of foreigner's work permit in the People’s Republic of China issued by Chinese government authorities for Human Resources and Social Security (photocopy), foreigners who go to China for short-term employment also need to provide APPROVAL OF SHORT-TERM EMPLOYMENT FOR FOREIGNERS WORKING IN P.R.CHINA issued by Chinese government authorities for Human Resources and Social Security (photocopy) or 2) Permit for foreign experts working in China issued by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs (original and photocopy) or 3) Registration certificate of resident representative offices of enterprises of foreign countries(regions) issued by Chinese authorities of industrial and commercial administration (original and photocopy), as well as Invitation letter of duly authorized unit or confirmation letter of invitation issued by relevant Chinese entities (original or photocopy) or 4) An approval document for commercial performances issued by the Chinese government authorities for cultural affairs (original and photocopy) or 5) Letter of invitation for foreigners engaged in offshore petroleum operations in the People’s Republic of China issued by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (original and photocopy).

Long-term Study Visa (X1-Visa)
  • Issued to those intending to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.

  • Application Process: Applications are lodged through the China visa application centre.
